Plainfield, New Jersey stands as a stark example of this divide.

• New Jersey is the 3rd wealthiest state in US with 2019 median household income of $82,545 compared to Plainfield’s 2019 median household income of $56,339.  

•  21.2% of Plainfield, NJ residents had an income below the poverty level in 2019, which was 56.8% greater than the poverty level of 9.2% across the entire state of New Jersey

• NJ has one of the top school systems in the nation, but Plainfield is one of the lowest-performing school districts in the state

Hard-working families, facing high rates of low-wage employment, find it increasingly difficult to break the cycle of poverty and the continuing racial, socioeconomic, and educational injustice that plagues their neighborhoods.
